EDTF Date - 046 - RDA Cataloging Examples

Image
RDA Cataloging Examples  of use of Extended Date Time Format (EDTF) in  MARC 21 field 046 for Special Coded Dates  in  Resource Description and Access  ( RDA ) Name Authority Records   DCM Z1 046 update in Cataloger's Desktop 2015 Issue 3 release Cataloger's Desktop 2015 Issue 3 was released on August 11, 2015. This release includes an important update to DCM Z1 instruction sheet  046 , Special Coded Dates.  LC/NACO catalogers: please note that the formatting of dates in the 046 field has changed. When supplying dates in field 046 , use the Extended Date Time Format (EDTF) schema in all cases except for centuries; supply dates using the pattern yyyy, yyyy-mm, or yyyy-mm-dd; always add subfield $2 edtf except after a century . The more consistent use of $2 edtf is based on a PCCLIST discussion suggestion to simplify the use of $2 (always use except for centuries). Examples: 046 ## $f 1884-10-11$g 1962-11-07...

LCSH revisions due to RDA Phase 2 revisions

The RDA Phase 2 changes to the name authority file were completed on March 27, 2013, so the Library of Congress’ Policy and Standards Division will now begin to update LCSH authority records.  PSD expects to complete the project by the end of April 2013. Personal, corporate, and conference names, as well as titles and geographic headings (MARC 21 fields 100, 110, 111, 130, and 151), that are established in the name authority file and are also printed in LCSH are eligible for revision.  Phrase headings and subdivisions that are based on names or titles (e.g., Food in the Koran; Future life—Koranic teaching) will also be revised as necessary. This is a large project that must be undertaken in a systematic manner in order to find all of the affected records.  LC catalogers and SACO participants are therefore requested to refrain from making proposals to update headings until after PSD announces the completion of the project.   At this time, PSD is not...

Bibliographic Framework as a Web of Data: Linked Data Model and Supporting Services

The Library of Congress is pleased to report that we have reached two important milestones with respect to our Bibliographic Framework Initiative: the introduction of a draft data model for web-based bibliographic description and a first meeting of a small group of early experimenters currently exploring the feasibility of the proposed model.  The new model is simply called BIBFRAME, short for Bibliographic Framework. The model document is a high-level view of the BIBFRAME model - a primer.  Although the model is a draft and expected to change, we want to share it now with the community not only so that you are informed of progress being made but also to engender conversation and constructive feedback.   The URL for the document  Bibliographic Framework as a Web of Data: Linked Data Model and Supporting Service s is:  http://www.loc.gov/marc/transition/pdf/marcld-report-11-21-2012.pdf (Source: Library of Congress Website)

Access to AACR2 via Cataloger’s Desktop after March 31, 2013

I n January 2012 the Library of Congress announced that it would transition from AACR2 ( Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules , second edition) to RDA ( Resource Description and Access ) on March 31, 2013. AACR2 is currently available via LC’s web-based cataloging documentation subscription service, Cataloger’s Desktop , as well as through RDA Toolkit . In keeping with LC’s decision to switch from AACR2 to RDA, Cataloger’s Desktop will simultaneously change how access to AACR2 is provided. On April 1, 2013, if you subscribe to both Cataloger’s Desktop and RDA Toolkit (which includes an online version of AACR2), you will continue to have access to AACR2. If you subscribe to Cataloger’s Desktop but not to RDA Toolkit and want online access to AACR2, you will need to establish an RDA Toolkit subscription at http://www.rdatoolkit.org/ To ease the impact of the transition, current Cataloger’s Desktop subscribers will get an additional month for FREE upon subscription renewal. That...

DCM Z1 Update

DCM Z1 Update: 1) The update includes agreements between PCC and LC with regard to "best practices" in the new MARC fields for authority records. Note especially the information on the use of subfields $u and $v; the full text on the use of $u and $v is supplied only in the 046 section, but it is referenced in each of the fields where these subfields may be used. Here is an excerpt from that 046 section on the use of subfields $u and $v -- NACO catalogers please take note: The following represents PCC practice on recording sources of information in $u and $v in fields where they are defined, and/or in field 670: 1. 670s must be used to support information used as part of a heading in 1XX and 4XX. 2. For 046, 37X, 381: a. use of $v is optional if the same information/source is already cited in the 670 b. use $v if the information/source is not cited in a 670 c. use of $u is optional, and should always be preceded by $v. 2) Catalogers are instructed to no longer supply Conte...
