Compilations, Selections, Translations in RDA & AACR2 & Cutter Numbers : Questions & Answers

How do you cutter a translation of a new collection of stories or poems by one author? How would you account for the collection title in the original language? Under the new guidelines in RDA, many compilations of poems, stories, etc. by one author that used to be cuttered and treated as separate works according to the old LCRI 25.10 because the collection had a “distinctive” title are now given a conventional collective title and cuttered as collections or selections according to CSM F633.  However, there isn’t an example in F633 which illustrates what to do with the original title proper of a translation of collected poems, stories, etc. if the original collection title was “distinctive”. In some cases, the collection in the original language wasn’t published long enough ago for it to have necessarily “become known” by that title (the original collection and translation may even be published in the same year). So, according to RDA 6.2.2.10, the translation of such a col...

Name/Title NAR (Name Authority Record) in RDA : Questions & Answers : RDA Examples

Image
QUESTION: I have to create a N/T NAR for selections of stories of an author, but the NAR for the author is established in AACR2. How to create N/T NAR in this case, can we establish N/T NAR straightaway in RDA? ANSWER: In order to create a Name/Title Name Authority Record (NAR) for a MARC21 240 tag in Resource Description & Access (RDA), the base  Name Authority Record (NAR) for the person has to be also in RDA first. If the base NAR for the person is in AACR2, then it should be converted to RDA. For example, please see lccn: 2012350684 Bibliographic Record 100 0_  | a   Jayabhikkhu,   | d   1908-1969,   | e   author. 240 10  | a   Children's stories.   | k   Selections 245 10  | a   Jayabhikkhunī śreshṭha bāḷavārtāo =   | b   Jaybhikhkhuni shreshtha balvartao /  | c   śreṇī-sampādako, Yaśavanta Mahetā, Śraddhā Trivedī. 246 31  | a ...

Adding Date to Conventional Collective Titles : Questions and Answers

Image
Question:  According to slide 8 of  http://www.loc.gov/aba/rda/ source/special_topics_ compilations.ppt   we are to add the date to conventional collective titles beginning with "Works". Please verify if this is now optional or required. Answer:    The PPT  take a look at it now.  http://www.loc.gov/aba/rda/ Refresher_training_dec_2011. html Question:   Great! Slide 8 is now revised. However, slide 9 still gives an example of the old practice. Answer ( Ana Lupe Cristán,  Library of Congress) :   Yes, the point is you DON’T HAVE to add it but you can if you want too.  It used to be mandatory now it is optional, plus you'll see a lot of them still in the LC/NAF and we do not expect catalogers to remove the dates.    Revised Slides as Discussed Above Compilations of one creator: Things to remember If your resource is a compilation by a single creator, determine if that compilation has become known...

Preferred Title, Works, Selections: LC-PCC Best Practices Guidelines

Myth: “If two different works have the same preferred title, there is a conflict that must be broken by adding the form, date, or place of origin of the work, or another distinguishing characteristic.” Reality: Not necessarily.  The authorized access point for the work is the combination of preferred title and creator (if any).  If the combination of these elements is not the same, there is no conflict.  Myth: “In determining whether there is a conflict, you should predict whether one is likely.” Reality: Wrong.  According to LC-PCC PS 6.27.1.9, you should only break actual existing conflicts. Myth: “In order to break a conflict in naming a work, the first preference is form of the work.  Then, if necessary, add date , place of origin , or other distinguishing characteristic -- in that order.” Reality: No, there is no ‘first preference’ for breaking conflicts.  Use whichever of those elements most effectively breaks the confli...
