245 - Title Statement - MARC21

245 - Title Statement (Non Repeatable) Title and statement of responsibility area of the bibliographic description of a work. Title proper is the chief name of a resource.  It is the focus for identifying the preferred source of information.  An alternative title is treated as part of the title proper.  The title proper excludes any parallel titles proper, other title information, and parallel other title information.  Field 245 contains the title, other title information and statement of responsibility, as well as the numerical designation of a part or section and the name of a part or section. The title is recorded exactly as to wording, spelling and diacritical marks, but not necessarily as to order and punctuation. Source of Information If the information does not appear on a source forming part of the resource itself, take it from one of the following sources (in order of preference): a)      accompanying material (e.g., a l...

RDA Cataloging Examples for Creating Variant Titles for Portion of Title Proper - Best Practices

Image
Watch this video on YouTube on Resource Description & Access (RDA) Channel of RDA Blog For titles proper that contain an alternative title, ensure title access to the complete title proper to the first part of the title proper up-to the word "or" or equivalent in another language that signals an alternative title and to the part following the word "or" or its equivalent in another language. If the title proper contains a part or designation of a part, or both, make a variant title usually for the part when it is judged intelligible enough to be a likely candidate for access. Make a variant title for a portion of a title proper, when it is judged that some user would consider the portion as the title proper.  Follow  RDA Blog  in Social Media:  Google+  |  Facebook  |  Google+ Community  |  Twitter  |  YouTube   |  SlideShare  |  Tumblr   |  WordPress  |  Flipboard ...

Titles of Serials : LC-PCC Best Practices Guidelines

Myth: “Typos and errors in the titles of serials should be recorded as they appear, and NOT be corrected -- just like monographs.” Reality: Incorrect.  In order to record a consistent title for all issues of a serial and all issues of an integrating resource, such errors SHOULD be corrected (per the exception at 2.3.1.4), and a variant title (246) can be recorded for the title as on the resource (i.e., with the error).  [Source : Library of Congress]

Title Proper : LC-PCC Best Practices Guidelines

Myth: “When transcribing the title, you can generally do whatever you wish regarding capitalization.” Reality: Not really.  The LC-PCC PS for the first alternative to 1.7.1 states “For capitalization of transcribed elements, catalogers are encouraged (but not required) to follow Appendix A.”  It is permitted to ‘take what you see’ on the resource.  If you choose the option of taking exactly what you see, do that for the entirety of the element.   [Source : Library of Congress]

Source of Parallel Title and Title Proper : Best Practices

Source of Parallel Title and Title Proper : Best Practices In the BIB record, the note for the source of the parallel title is not necessary.  Only title propers need a note if from outside of t.p.
